The November 2020 US Presidential Election comes with an explosive mix of leadership crisis, civil unrest, a festering pandemic, and severe economic disruption. The results of the US elections have always had reverberations in Asia and now, more than usual, as the future of a rules-based approach to trade, commerce, and climate change is at stake.
Against this backdrop, we consider:
– What factors could impact the US electoral outcome?
– What are the implications for Singapore’s economy and those of its partners—including China?
– How can businesses in different sectors better prepare for various scenarios as the election draws closer?
Meet the Speakers
Taimur Baig, Ph.D., heads economics as well as macro strategy for interest rate, credit, currency, and equities at DBS Group Research. He also advises the bank on risk management and investment strategy. Prior to joining DBS, Dr Baig was a Principal Economist in the Economic Policy Group, Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS). Earlier he spent nine years at Deutsche Bank’s Singapore office, where his last position was Managing Director and Chief Economist, Asia. Before Deutsche Bank, he was based in Washington, DC, at the headquarters of the International Monetary Fund, for eight years, where his last position was Senior Economist. Dr Baig has published extensively for both specialists and a general audience, on areas including monetary policy in a deflationary environment, exchange rate regime determination, demographics, energy sector, frontier markets, fiscal policy efficacy, and financial market contagion. Dr Baig sits as a council member for the Asian Financial Think Tank, Economic Society of Singapore, and Women’s World Banking. Dr Baig holds a Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He attended London School of Economics and Wabash College for his B.A. in Economics.
Steven Okun is a renowned expert on US politics, government and trade. As a Senior Advisor for McLarty Associates, he works with clients at the nexus of business and policy. The firm understands the complexities of international markets and helps its clients navigate the strategic and operational challenges they face around the globe. Steve provides analysis on a regular basis for both CNBC and Channel NewsAsia and appears on other global media, as well as writing regular commentary for Singapore’s The Straits Times. In addition, he does corporate engagements with the Asia regional offices of global financial services firms on the US elections and politics. Formerly Deputy General Counsel in the Clinton Administration at the US Department of Transportation, he worked on each presidential campaigns of the Democratic candidates from 1988-2000. Steve is the founder and CEO of APAC Advisors, a boutique public affairs and sustainability consultancy.
Mr Jack Ilmonen, (MSc, MBA) has 20 years’ experience in investment management, within listed and non-listed companies, at Legg Mason Inc (USA), the Local Government Pension Institution (Finland), D. Carnegie AB Investment Bank, AKTIA Asset Management/ Nasdaq-OMX-Listed Aktia Bank Plc. Jack earned his MBA in corporate strategy and corporate finance at Vanderbilt University in the USA. Jack also studied China corporate finance cases at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, HKUST. Mr Ilmonen is a William J. Fulbright scholar alumni (USA). Mr Ilmonen is currently a doctoral student in France, expecting to graduate in 2021-2022, focusing his research on customer-based valuation of Chinese Online Medical Services companies Alibaba Health and Ping a Good Doctor. Mr Ilmonen has recently (2020) received the highest commercial award of the Chamber of Commerce of Finland for successfully supporting dozens of Finnish corporations in China and Asia for over 15 years, www.chamber.fi. Jack has spent over 18 years in HK and mainland China and he speaks fluent daily Mandarin Chinese. Mr Ilmonen is originally from Finland, EU.
