Synopsis

EuroCham welcomes you to this webinar which will address the human rights risk present in supply chains and trading and how companies can be a force for good in ASEAN. Modern slavery and human rights violations are still a global plague and at risk of becoming endemic in some countries. Eurocham is organising for the first time a cross-committee exchange on responsibilities and opportunities for European companies to make a positive contribution in the region. 

The Webinar will look at these issues in the context of the first global standard for preventing and addressing the risk of adverse impacts on human rights linked to business activity: the U.N. Guiding Principles of 2011, based on three pillars: the state duty to protect human rights, the corporate responsibility to respect human rights, and the right of victims to access an effective remedy. The European Union and ASEAN have both recognised the Guiding Principles as the authoritative policy framework for corporate social responsibly.

Mr Marzuki DARUSMAN
Chair

Mr Marzuki Darusman was a member of Indonesia’s People’s Representative Council, representing Bandung for 15 years. In 1994, he became a member of Indonesia’s National Commission on Human Rights, later serving as its Deputy Chairman and, subsequently, Chairman. He served as the country’s Attorney General from 1999 to 2001, following which he was appointed Cabinet Secretary.

He participated in the United Nations inquiry into the assassination of former Pakistan prime minister, Benazir Bhutto. In 2010, he was part of the three-person panel to write the Secretary- General’s Panel of Experts on Accountability in Sri Lanka, which dealt with alleged war crimes during the Sri Lankan Civil War. Later that year, he was appointed United Nations Special Rapporteur on Human Rights in North Korea. In July 2017, he was appointed as Chair of an Independent International FactFinding Mission on Myanmar under the UN Human Rights Council.

Mr Darusman, with other human rights advocates, established the Foundation for International Human Rights Reporting Standards (“FIHRRST”), a non-profit that targets the advancement of human rights in all areas. Under his leadership, FIHRRST has cultivated numerous relationships with government ministries and departments. The organization has developed the Business and Human Rights Standards for Certification (BHRSC 2011) and helped Indonesia’s Ministry of Maritime Affairs draft the standards for the country’s fishing industry.

 

Ms Tequila BESTER
Programme Coordinator for Human Rights Cities, Vulnerable Persons and Other Social Issues

Ms Bester is a Programme Coordinator with 15 years of professional experience social services for various organisations in the United States.

Over the course of her professional career, Ms Bester has worked with diverse and underrepresented populations in Alaska and Massachusetts. She has advocated and assisted these groups in breaking down barriers to self-sufficiency. In addition, she has trained others on how to best support these marginalized individuals.

Ms Bester assisted individuals fleeing persecution seek asylum in the United States. Also, she worked with other legal organisations to help people who were discriminated against based on race, color, national origin, sexual orientation, or disability. In her most recent work, she has sought to bring awareness to issues such as human trafficking and the relationship between science, information and health.

Ms Bester earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology from Alaska Pacific University in 2002. She obtained her Master of Science in Counseling Psychology from Alaska Pacific University in 2004. In May 2017, Ms Bester earned her Juris Doctor degree from New England Law Boston. Her legal focus was on International Human Rights Law and Immigration Law.

 

Mr Jan SEYMOUR
Managing Director for International Trade & Compliances 
Pacific E Compliance

Mr Seymour is the Managing Director for International Trade and Compliance at Pacific E Compliance. In this role, he assists small and medium-sized companies to create or enhance trade compliance and general corporate compliance programs. Prior to joining Pacific E Compliance, Mr Seymour was the global subject matter expert for trade compliance, including sanctions, for a major international oil company. He advised on sanctions issues worldwide and resided in Chicago, Houston and Singapore. Mr Seymour is the U.S. trained and qualified lawyer.

Ms Wei Ling KONG
LEGO Value Chain Optimisation – Operating Model

Ms Kong has over 20 years of experience in the consumer industry.  She started her career in Consumer Electronics as an R&D engineer.  She then moved on to Product Management with successful product launches in various markets.  Other roles included Marketing, Business Development and Strategy.  She moved from Singapore to Amsterdam in 2005 and later to Hong Kong in 2011.  

Ms Kong returned to Singapore in 2014 and joined The LEGO Group after completed a divestment project.   She helps to develop The LEGO Group’s operating model that secures commercial growth.  Part of the role is to ensure all areas of the value chain work coherently by identifying optimisation opportunities across product development, marketing, manufacturing, supply chain, sales and business intelligence. Ms Kong is grateful and humbled to work for a company with very strong family values with high commitment towards building a better world and community.  With a pair of young twins, she relearns the basics of humanity, respect, love, commitment and responsibility.  She likes to reflect and meditate when she can find the moment.
