In the framework of the EU Industry Days and EU Industry Week 2022, the EU Delegation to Singapore and the European Chamber of Commerce of Singapore (EuroCham) will organise the webinar “The road to resilience: Pathways and Maps in support of our Industry”.
The EU Industry Days, Europe’s flagship annual event on industry, will take place in the week of 8-11 February 2022 in Brussels while local events worldwide will be organised throughout the months of January and February. The event serves as the main platform to discuss industrial challenges and co-develop opportunities and policy responses in an inclusive dialogue with a wide range of partners. It helps to ensure that policies at global, European, national, regional and local levels work together to enable European industry to deliver jobs, growth and innovation.
The event organised by the EU Delegation to Singapore and EuroCham Singapore will contribute to raise awareness and implement flagship policies of the EU, including the EU industrial policy, the EU Strategy for Cooperation in the Indo-Pacific (sustainable and inclusive prosperity) and more broadly of EU’s Global Gateway strategy.
SYNOPSIS
The COVID-19 pandemic has brought the issue of resilience of our economy and society at the forefront of the political agenda. Faced with an increasingly fast digitalisation and the urgency of shifting to sustainable business models, companies have also to navigate surging disruption of supply chains worldwide. Policy makers around the globe have designed new or updated tools to support industry in becoming more resilient. While some countries have adopted a protectionist stance, the EU and other like-minded partners (like Singapore) continue supporting open strategic autonomy and a multilateral trade. The EU and Singapore have developed in parallel policy tools that present many commonalities: on one side the EU talks about Transition Roadmaps and on the other Singapore talks about Industry Transformation Maps. The methodology to craft these instruments is also largely coincident and centred around a dialogue with key stakeholders from private and public sectors as well as civil society.
The webinar will offer the opportunity to EU and Singapore policy makers and industry representatives to: i) present the maps and pathways developed in support of our companies and reflect on how synergies could be developed among them; ii) exchange views on how strengthen resilience beyond the simple diversification of supply chains; and iii) reinforce the exchange among public, private and academia.

Maroš Šefčovič
Vice-President of the European Commission in charge of Interinstitutional Relations and Foresight.
European Commission
Maroš Šefčovič (born in 1966) is a Slovak diplomat, who since 1 December 2019 has served as Vice-President of the European Commission in charge of Interinstitutional Relations and Foresight. In this capacity, he leads the Commission’s work on interinstitutional relations, better policymaking, strategic foresight and the European Battery Alliance. He is also responsible for the European Union’s relations with the United Kingdom, co-chairing the EUUK Partnership Council under the Trade and Cooperation Agreement and the EU-UK Joint Committee for the implementation of the Withdrawal Agreement. European affairs have been at the centre of Mr Šefčovič’s career for over a decade. In 2014, he was elected as a Member of the European Parliament. From 2010-2019, he was VicePresident of the European Commission in charge of first Interinstitutional Relations and Administration, and then the Energy Union. In 2009-2010, he was European Commissioner for Education, Training, Culture and Youth. From 2004 -2009, he was the Permanent Representative of the Slovak Republic to the European Union, contributing to the country’s major integration projects, such as its entry to the Eurozone and the Schengen area. As a diplomat by profession, he served between 1992 and 2004 in Zimbabwe and Canada and as Ambassador to Israel. He graduated from the University of Economy in Bratislava, Slovakia, and the Moscow State Institute for Foreign Relations. He holds a degree as Doctor of Law and a PhD of European Law from Faculty of Law at the Comenius University in Bratislava, Slovakia. He also undertook training in diplomacy at Stanford University, USA. He wrote a book “Driving the EU forward – talks with Maroš Šefčovič”, focused on his first mandate as the Commission Vice-President. In 2018, he was awarded the title of Doctor Honoris Causa at the Pan-European University in Bratislava, Slovakia.

Head of Unit for Industrial Forum, Alliances and Clusters within DG GROW, the Directorate General being responsible for Internal Market, Industry, Entrepreneurship and SMEs.

Mrs Ulla Engelmann is the Head of Unit for Industrial Forum, Alliances and Clusters within DG GROW, the Directorate General being responsible for Internal Market, Industry, Entrepreneurship and SMEs, at the European Commission. Her portfolio covers the work of the industrial forum, governance of industrial alliances, the organisation of the EU Industry Days, the management and coordination of networks such as EEN (Enterprise Europe Network), clusters and Erasmus for Young entrepreneurs. In previous functions, she was responsible for Social Economy, Pact for Skills, women entrepreneurship and entrepreneurship education. She worked at the Joint Research Centre (JRC), the in-house science service of European Commission. She started in the JRC in Ispra (Italy) in 1993 as a post-doc in fusion research, and moved on to manage various units (communication, international relations, and others). Dr. Engelmann holds a PhD in analytical and radiochemistry completed at the National Research Centre in Karlsruhe.
Tan Lin Teck

Tan Lin Teck is currently Director of the Future Economy Planning Office (FEPO) in the Ministry of Trade & Industry (MTI). FEPO’s key roles include working with stakeholders to drive the development of industry transformation maps (ITMs), coordinating cluster strategies amongst ITMs, and monitoring the implementation of ITMs and the recommendations from the Committee on the Future Economy (CFE), amongst other long-term efforts to grow Singapore’s economy. Prior to this posting, Lin Teck has served stints in the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), Ministry of Manpower (MOM), and the Ministry of Education (MOE). Lin Teck is a historian by training, interest, and passion; and completed his degree in the National University of Singapore many years ago. He also completed a Master of Arts in International Relations in the Fletcher School of Law & Diplomacy, Tufts University.

Simonetta COOK is a political advisor to the President of the European Council, Charles Michel. She counsels him on digital policy, inter-institutional relations and preparations for leaders’ European Council meetings.
Specialised in EU law, having attended University College London and the College of Europe in Bruges, Simonetta worked in private practice on corporate and EU regulatory law before beginning her career in the EU institutions. She has gained experience in the European Parliament, the Council and now European Council. She has advised on legislative drafting, negotiation strategies, political messaging and strategic planning.
