Traceability: the cornerstone of consumer safety
A dialogue on traceability systems and their critical importance in providing confidence and assurance to consumers

Synopsis

Traceability enables tracking of goods at all stages of the supply chain. The ability to trace and follow consumer goods – including food, feed, and ingredients – through all stages of production, processing and distribution, not only facilitates the withdrawal of faulty and dangerous products, but provides consumers with confidence and assurance that the products they buy are safe. Similarly, producers and brand owners do not only rely on traceability to carry out targeted withdrawals of products if an unexpected risk to human health is detected, but they increasingly see traceability as a broader risk mitigation and management tool.

The establishment of the Singapore Food Agency (SFA) on 1 April 2019 provides an excellent opportunity to discuss Singapore’s current food recall protocol and rekindle discussions around different types of traceability systems. Set up to oversee the food supply chain – from manufacturing and local production to import and retail – SFA has the important job of securing the provision of safe food in the context of increasingly complex supply chains.

In this regard, the European Chamber of Commerce is proud to host an event dedicated to traceability in view of facilitating the sharing of experiences from different industry sectors and companies active in Singapore, the EU and the across the APAC region.

Objective

To enhance awareness of (1) the need to adopt and legally safeguard robust traceability systems that offer confidence and assurance to consumers; and (2) share experiences on different solutions that exist across different industries.

Event details:

The European Chamber will bring together relevant stakeholders, including government agencies, industry partners and service providers, to share experiences and exchange views on this important topic for consumer safety.

Speakers

Davide Besana – Corporate Affairs, Edrington Asia Pacific

Davide joined Edrington from the Trade and Economic section of the EU Delegation to Singapore. Previously, he also worked for the European Commission in Brussels (DG TRADE) where he gained valuable experience in trade negotiations with Singapore, Malaysia, Canada, and East and Southern African countries. He is responsible for working with local partners across Asia Pacific to reduce harmful drinking and to promote a balanced and inclusive regulatory and taxation environment that supports responsible and sustainable business growth.

 

Laurent Chanimbaud – Regional Supply Chain Director, Moët Hennessy Asia Pacific

Laurent is the regional supply chain director at Moët Hennessy Asia Pacific, based in Singapore. Laurent has spent the last 25 years as a supply chain professional with the most recent 10 years at Moet Hennessy, and previously at pharmaceuticals company Sanofi for 15 years, managing markets across Eastern Europe, the Middle East, Africa, Latin America, and Asia. Throughout his career, Laurent has managed projects related to traceability across both industries and have been involved also in product recalls. Laurent graduated from the ESC Clermont Graduate School of Management in France with a master’s degree in marketing and international management.

 

Chong Nyet Chin – Food Safety and Quality Director, NTUC FairPrice Co-operative Limited

Ms Chong holds a Science degree in Chemistry from National University of Singapore, and an MBA from Leicester University, UK. She has over 20 years’ experience in the areas of quality assurance and food safety, well-versed in GMP, HACCP, ISO 9001, ISO 22000, 6 Sigma and Total Quality Management. She was invited to share her experiences in various conferences such as food safety congress, ECR, Food&HotelAsia (FHA) International Conference and Lean Six Sigma.
As a technical professional, she has served in various working committee and focus groups set up by government authority such as AVA, Enterprise Singapore (previously Spring) and NEA in areas of Cold Chain Management Standard, FMCG standards and Food Safety Regulations. In 2017, she received the Merit award for Quality and Standards given by Spring Singapore, endorsing her contributions to the Singapore standards journey. She is currently the Technical Chair of food processing and distribution under Singapore food standard committee. In her current position in FairPrice, she is responsible for the overall control of the food safety management and quality assurance system as well as regulatory management for the Co-operatives. Due to keen interest in quality management systems and strong belief that a strong foundation in system will build a strong brand, she has helped Fairprice in developing the risk management framework and various control measures in fulfilling the vision of assuring food safety from source to store.
