The Treaty of Lisbon - Taking Europe into the 21st century The Treaty of Lisbon entered into force on 1 December 2009. It provides the EU with modern institutions and optimized working methods to tackle both efficiently and effectively today's challenges in today's world. In a rapidly changing world, Europeans look to the EU to address issues such as globalization, climatic and demographic changes, security and energy. The Treaty of Lisbon reinforces democracy in the EU and its capacity to promote the interests of its citizens on a day-to-day basis.

Road to Copenhagen 2009 2009 is a crucial year in the international efforts to address climate change. A series of United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) meetings is taking place throughout the year in order to find an effective international response to climate change for the period after 2012 when the Kyoto Protocol expires. The intention is to come to a new agreement to replace the Kyoto Protocol at the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP15) in Copenhagen, 7-18 December 2009. The European Union (EU) has been at the forefront of international efforts to combat climate change since the 1990s and it again plays an important role in the ongoing negotiations for a new post-Kyoto climate agreement.

20th Anniversary of the Fall of the Berlin Wall The fall of the Berlin wall reveals a story of freedom, the fight for civil rights and democracy, showing the triumph of human aspirations over seemingly insurmountable odds. It is a prime example that history can be changed by people. In a sudden turn of events, the people of East Germany went from being repressed by an authoritative regime to that of staging mass demonstrations in 1989 eventually leading to the fall of the Berlin wall. This struggle for freedom had its roots in the city of Gdansk, Poland in 1980 where the Solidarnosc movement led by Lech Walesa orchestrated a nationwide strike and set the example of a non-violent attempt to achieve social and political change.
